I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again – I love a rainy day. No matter what time of year, the feeling of coziness it evokes is just so lovely. I don’t even mind it during a long weekend at the beach. You can only bake in the sun for so long, ya know?
That’s why Memorial Day Weekend was so perfect this year. It started out with two days of beautiful beach weather followed by one wet, drizzly day. I rubbed some aloe on my uncomfortably sunburnt back (I seem to never learn), pulled on a summer sweater, and we brought our sandy game of Rummikub inside.
There are a few guarantees for summer at the beach. You will play (and if you’re like me, you’ll lose) beach bocce, you will ride a bike everywhere, and you’ll drink your fair share of Dark ‘n’ Stormies. We drink them rain or shine, but really, I can’t say I don’t love a Dark’n’Stormy when it is in fact dark and stormy.
So this Memorial Day, after a leisurely lunch and game of Rummikub, we whipped up a batch of Dark’n’Stormies to round out the first beach weekend of the year. It’s a simple recipe, and not exact. It’s half dark (Gosling’s dark rum), half stormy (ginger beer), garnished with a lime wedge. Pour it over ice, serve it with a bendy straw, and you’re in business. Bonus points if you can magically summon up the rainy day to match.
